The motivation for a blog on trail running came as I was trotting back to the ute from yet another training run along the Atiwhakatu track. A brisk July day, IPod blaring, Solomon’s splashing through the mud and sliding off slippery roots, muscles warm and tired, and a hot wood fired bath under a Kanuka beckoning (maybe) – magic.
Tararua running doesn’t get easier than this! |
So this blog has no particular goal – other than being a forum for sharing experiences out running tracks in my local Tararua range, and occasionally further afield.
Having nearly ticked over 40 the excuse that I’ll do it “when I’m a big boy” now carries no weight – I am soon to be the big boy!
Don’t expect to read too much here about formal events. I’m simply enjoying getting fit and running in the hills for running’s sake - although there are a couple of events coming up that I'll mention at some stage.
A bit of background - my running has been sporadic for a number of years and I’ve generally been putting this down to a January 2007 trip to the Olivine Wilderness Area at Mt Aspiring that didn’t go as well as planned. The long and short of it being an ankle that took a very long time to heal.
Right now I’m trying to recover from a damaged Achilles which stems from a longer term back problem. This has required my running, which was never consistent in any case, to drop back to weeks of 10 minute runs on alternate days, increasing to 20 minutes, then 40 minutes. Right now what seems to be working is three runs per week of up to 90 minutes. The days off in between seem to help heal my Achilles. This has all been assisted with seven weeks of physio, acupuncture and massage!
If the Achilles problem persists this blog may come to an abrupt end. Otherwise I'll keep writing as long as I'm managing to run interesting trails. One thing I can guarantee is that updates will be sporadic!
